I'm Confused

This week was a strange one. It brought me to recognize a few things about my limitations and the Lord's ability to exceed them. My inability and the Lord's ability. His infinite knowledge and my finite knowledge, and ultimately his greatness and power over my weaknesses, sin and shortcomings. Let me explain.

I have this young kid in one of my kindergarten classes, which if you have been following along, is one of my favorites. I'm talking about Eddie. He is 5 years old but bigger, stronger, smarter and just generally ahead of everybody in the class. This gave me headaches when I first arrived (my uneducated medical opinion would consider him autistic, but I'm not sure if this is actually true). He would take his color pencil, put it on the ground, and simply crawl around the classroom, drawing circle after circle, corner to corner on the hardwood floor until I was able to lift my head out of the child I was helping to notice I was in a giant red circle. I would turn around too see the guilty party right behind me, pencil in hand, knees on the floor and the line ending right where he was. I would then command him to erase it and he would get possessive about it when others would try to help him. "No, I must erase, go away..............". This happened day in and day out up through the end of July until about August, but over the past few months, I have noticed a complete turn around. He turned from one of my most dreaded students to the one that can brighten my day by just saying hello. The kid has made huge changes and I have a hard time not letting him be my "favorite" in class. He went from not caring about lining up for snack time to wanting to be #1, which may not mean anything to you or I, but this is a big thing for most kindergarteners. You get the picture. I love him.

So when I walked the class that I have with Eddie, I hadn't even gotten through the door when the Korean teacher leaned over to me and mentioned that Eddie will be moving in the middle of October. My face turned pale, and my heart sank.......................This took a few minutes to get over (I'm not kidding) I sat in class sat in the class dumbfounded, not really listening to the kids as I took attendance, but just thinking, Lord, how the heck can you take this child away from me? Have you not seen the progress I have made with him? Do you know what your doing? (I knew the answer to this one) Why not this one, or this one, how about I put these two together and you have take two, just don't take Eddie! It was here that I recognized my limitations. It is the Lord who gives and takes, not I. I have no control over who comes and who goes. My time with some people will be shorter than others for one reason or another, or even no reason at all. For me to suggest that one is mine (at least in the classroom) takes away the sovereignty of the Lord, as for what I am unable the Lord is able. Simply read about those who saw Jesus after he rose from the dead, or performed miracles. I would take that over anything I could do, but this took some time to realize.

It would be in this same week that my other kindergarten class almost drives me to the end of my rope. These kids are a year younger than Eddie and his class (about 4 years old), and simply can't avoid speaking Korean all class long. This is understandable, as they are 4 years old and Korean, so I have generally been able to put up with it, until of late. This is because as they speak Korean to one another, out of the blue, three kids will be "down and out". By this I simply mean crying. Out of nowhere! So I make the obvious conclusion that the Korean has to stop, so I ask nicely, I write names on the board (kids hate this) I take stickers away, I slam my hand down on the table and eventually I start to yell. This is my final card and I have to play it. Yelling (within reason of course, this is a kindy class) is an impulsive action when nothing else will work, so I found myself doing a lot of yelling in this class. Mostly in order to prevent an outbreak of tears and kids asking for mom (this is a business, gotta keep them happy, or at least try). Needless to say, I haven't been "loving" these kids so well in class.

So why is it that this week I have a parent approach me and thank me for how I have treated her child in this class? Why is it that the kids have been drawn to me more than ever when it feels like I have wanted to push them away as much as I can? Why do they grab my leg and never let me go?

Cause I have no idea!

It is here that I have realized my inability to love, yet the Lord undying love and grace for his people. I feel as though I have done little right to the kids, yet I am still accepted by them. I am not able to relate to them very well, yet they still love me (at least that is the impression I get). And no matter how badly I want things to be right and well, there are a few in class who will always try and change what is good and meant to be into what they want and feel is in their best interest.

No matter how frustrating this may be in class, I can only imagine how frustrated the Lord is with me, as I live in contradiction to his set out purpose, yet continue to run towards him in love and adoration of His lordship over time and everything in existence that has been, is or will be.

It has been an interesting week of thinking, realizing and understanding, and I'm sure there is plenty more to come. Afterall, this is a foreign country, and I am spending time with kids!

"O God, you are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you,
my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land
where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary
and behold your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift my hands.
My soul will be satisfied with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
My soul clings to you;
Your right hand upholds me.

Those who seek my life will be destroyed;
they will go down to the depths of the earth.
They will be given over to the sword
and become food for jackals.

But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God's name will praise him,
while the mouth of the liars will be silenced.

Little Greg (5 years old) will come to my desk during lunch and will say, "Kevin teacher, hockey".

This little 5 year old Korean boy saw a picture of a hockey player in one of our textbooks, then looked and pointed at me and says, "hockey".

Now he comes in every lunch and asks to see hockey pictures online. He usually gets them too, until a couple days ago when I came across a fighting clip, with a bunch of the female Korea teachers standing around..........woopsies!

I don't think they really understand fighting in hockey, and I didn't be the one responsible for showing Greg!

Great Festivus............

Great, Happy, Merry, Wonderful, I'm not sure how to appropriately greet somebody for the Korean holiday we are now celebrating, or taking a day off for. It's Chusak, which in North America we know as Thanksgiving. As important as Thanksgiving is in Canada, it carries a little more significance to an American, where they will generally go head over heals to get to a place with family or what not. That is the same feeling here in Korea, where approximately 40 million people go to where ever home is or where they may have grown up. This is essentially why I have stayed at home this weekend. I have heard that it may take up to 8 hours to travel 30 km's by car. As much as I would love to see the country, that really doesn't interest me so much.

So what have I done with myself this weekend, not to much. The weeks continue to move along faster and faster, and I have come to realize that my time out here will be over before I know it, so no sense in waiting for "later" to do certain things, because the longer you wait to hold them off, the more likely they are not to happen. This brought, Dan, Rob and I to Lotte World this weekend. This is Korea's West Edmonton Mall. I say that cause it's a huge mall with an amusement park, bigger than West Ed. however, not quite to the size or magnitude of a Disneyland.

To be anticlimactic, all we did was ride rides. Some good roller coasters, and free falls, but nothing exceptional. We did however go for a skate and that is a story. I have skated most of my life, but never had to skate with figure skates (they wouldn't allow hockey skates). This was pain and suffering. I had a toe pick. And I fell on one occasion and tripped myself on many others. However this one occasion that I did fall, I did so right into one of the many large puddles on the ice. And because I fell forward, as I slid, I gathered more water to form one larger puddle, which I found myself in. This didn't make Kevin super happy about anything.

But being mad, bitter angry does nothing for anybody, so I grinned and bore it for a while, until I decided enough was enough, and it was time to sit from the side and watch, with most of the front of my body soaking wet.

I hope that isn't to abrupt. I think the pictures this week will do a little more in what went on, as we had a great day with the kids, as they all got dressed up in their traditional Korean wear (can't remember what it's called) and played Korean games.

This of course stunned the kids the next day, as the reactions ranged from, "Kevin Teacher, I like" to "Where's Kevin teacher?" To the older students bring the straight goods, "I don't like it Kevin."

I prefer the clean look, less maintenance!

Kevin Disciplines Again

So my little kindergarten buddy, Special E-D-D-I-E, as I will call him, continues to fill the hour I spend with him with joy. As you may already know, he is slightly autistic and just a brilliant kid. He is "long" in his text book as he will say, as he has gone ahead of the rest of the class, and is finished a 100 page book while the rest of the class is at about the 40 page mark. He really doesn't pay attention to me at all, which is fine, as long as he doesn't distract others.

But when he does distract others, this can be a problem. He gets tunnel vision, and so often what he doesn't see is Kevin teacher standing at the other end. The other end can be a long way away as when he is into whatever he is doing, he's a tough one to distract, but when he's done he gets a bit of Kevin teacher.

So you ask, what does Kevin teacher do at this point? I have written his name on the board, little has happened, I have gone to writing one letter on the board at a time, threatening that something will happen when I spell his name, knowing full well that nothing actually will. This only encouraged him, as he would request more letters. "Kevin teacher, E-D-D please!" I have taken him out of class to let him "ponder his actions in class", only to have the fire extinguisher on the floor captivate him as I lecture him. This brings up questions like, "Kevin teacher, dangerous?" or "Water come out"................"Yes Eddie, both, don't touch!"

Then I threatened to send him to the school director, "scary Martin" (he's great, this is just the impression we try and give the kids). This worked for a bit, but started to wear off, when it did, I would actually physically drag him out of the class as he resisted and tell him that if he went outside, he wouldn't have to go to Martin.

Let's be serious, none of these worked, or at least they did, but with a bit of time, they all wore off. So behold...................I have found the ultimate, his weak spot, to be exploited whenever I feel the need to.............................."Eddie, dentist!"

O boy, this is like searching for treasure at the bottom of the rainbow and actually finding it. You knew it wasn't there, in fact, how could it be, it's a fairy tale!

Let me give you a brief conversation in the class, of one kid receiving the threat of discipline, and Eddie piping up to get his two cents in:

Victory (Kindergarten, whiner): "Kevin Teacher, Brian hitting"

Kevin (forcefully commanding, remembering this is a Kindergartener): "No hitting Brian, or to Martin!"

Brian: (silent........................)

E-D-D-I-E: "Kevin Teacher, Brian to Martin, I got to dentist?"

Kevin Teacher (with a grin on my face): "Yes Eddie, you go to dentist."

This has happened over and over again with this young guy, I just had to say something. I don't even think I am doing him any justice by blogging this. You really need to hear how he emphasizes particular syllables. It is pure comedy.

I hope it gives you a glimpse of at least one of the things a teacher does during his day. It has given me a whole new respect for those who teach kids this age, and it has affirmed my choice not to spend my entire life doing it. Maybe at some point the older ones, but not the young ones, that is for sure.

uyu = milk

"If you speak three languages, you are trilingual. If you speak two languages, you are bilingual. And if you only speak one language.....................your American"

These were pastor Leo's opening lines to his sermon this week. He says it as an American expat and I to say it with the portion of me that is American. Dual citizenship only gives me the ability to make fun of myself I suppose.....................and an army to get me out of here if the case were to arise!

Going offtrack. I took Korean my first stab at Korean lessons this week. I didn't think I would as any Asian language just looks to intimidating, but I heard that Korean was the easiest to learn of them all. Here is a brief list of the words I knew prior to taking the lessons

annyong haseyo = hello
coke = coke (the list of foods and beverages can go on here..................)
kamsa hamnida = thank you
yok = station (good for having cabs drop me off at the nearest subway station)
hanna guseyo = 1 please
dugge guseyo = 2 please
saage guseyo = 3 please
canada sarong = Canadian person, translation is person not citizen
miguk sarong = American person
hagwon = private school, my work

Now after one lesson I know how to say the following words

uyu = milk
....................
....................
....................

One would think I would ask for my money back, but for 30 bucks of 14 hours of lessons, I win.

To this point we have just been studying the simple vowels, which make sense, and I get them but I can't for the life of me make the phonetical noises that I need to in order to be understood. My mouth will have to make noises I don't think it can. We shall see how this turns out.

The funny story in all of this was running into Chad Graham, a former Briercrest buddy, on the subway platform on the way to the lessons. How random is that, I still can't get over it and it still makes me laugh. As I am doing right now..............................

This week will officially represent the three month mark. So I bought a nice winter jacket. $300 jacket for $180. Yellow of course. Kevin's citrus clothing theme continues..........Picture later.

The time out here has been good, as I learn about another culture, language, ways to deal with children that don't listen to you or understand what you say, and of course myself, which I will keep to myself for now.

Thanks for reading, I miss you all.
